Beyond Boundaries: Expanding The Next Greatest Generation
The Leadership Symposiums are offered to the ALEF Fellows throughout the academic year. Benefits derived from the Leadership Symposium offer these key components: Exposure through speaker series to new and seasoned leaders and their directives pertaining to leadership across Appalachia and beyond, Opportunities for students to build extended relationships with cohorts from partnering West Virginia Fellowship programs, Prospects for students to expand personal leadership philosophies through activities – both social, service based, and educational focus Progression activities of work-force development initiatives pertaining to West Virginia and across Appalachia and Reflective analysis pertaining to past year experience and expansion of those ideas in a non-traditional setting.
Mr. Roger Hewitt,Vice-President - Co-founder Omega Training Group, Inc., lead a session entitled The Building of a Successful Leader - From Coal Dust to Success. His talk centered on leadership characteristics, traits, attributes and skills that he followed to rise from the majestic West Virginia mountains to a highly successful leader in America’s Defense Industry including a successful career in the Army. He spoke of establishing life goals and objectives to form a path forward for achieving success and how to handle the many obstacles and pitfalls young leaders will face as they move up the corporate ladder.
Mr. B. Keith Fulton, Verizon, lead a session entitled: How Big is Your Circle Now and How Big Will You Make It?
He shared his personal journey that began while a student at Virginia Tech and which has brought him to the Mountain State as CEO of Verizon West Virginia. His message focused on how we can serve a greater purpose than ourselves in service to our state. How "good men and good women" have to think not just about our immediate responsibilities but make the right decisions in choosing who and what we become as leaders.
